The Stormbringer Saga

The following is a summary of the Stormbringer/Elric Saga of stories as published in Chaosium’s 5th Edition of the Stormbringer roleplaying game. Rather than rewriting this excellent overview it is presented here with only minor changes.

An Overview

The Elric Novels and short stories encompass approximately seven years of the albino emperor’s life. In order of events, the books are Elric of Melniboné, The Fortress of the Pearl, The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, The Weird of the White Wolf, The Vanishing Tower, The Revenge of the Rose, The Bane of the Black Sword, and Stormbringer.

A ninth book, Elric at the End of Time, contains two Elric tales among the works collected in it, but need not be considered a vital part of the saga. Of these, one takes place after The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, and the other fits between the last two stories in The Bane of the Black Sword.

A tenth (and similarly extraneous) book is Tales of the White Wolf, an anthology of Elric stories by various authors. It includes Moorcock’s short story “The White Wolf’s Song,” which takes place at an undefined time between the end of Elric of Melniboné and the beginning of The Sailor on the Seas of Fate. Finally, the Elric novel The Dreamthief’s Daughter was published in April 2001. This tale is not dealt with here.

A History of Stormbringer in Spanish

A Guest Article on the History of Stormbringer in Spanish by Jose J. Rodriguez

“¡Sangre y almas para mi señor Arioco!” Blood and souls for my Lord Arioch!

In the late 70s some Spanish gamers started to play role playing games thanks to some English and French editions. RPG’s popularity grew in the next years, and in 1985 Dalmau published the first RPG Spanish edition – Dungeons and Dragons. It’s said they were overambitious and printed too much red boxes (around 20,000), and therefore they lost money.

Site Update 2017

Hi All,

Just a note to say that there has been a bit of a tidy-up on the site, including a new website template (called ‘Lovecraft’ after one of my favourite authors, nonetheless!). This has also meant cleaning up some of the background code that was a result of formatting for the old template, and I’m sure, especially in the older posts, etc. that I’ve not caught it all.

In regards to new content, there isn’t much on the horizon at moment, but what I have rolling around in my head is:

  • An interview with Jean Luc over at Sombresprojects (the French publishers of Mournblade).
  • An old adventure Stormbringer 5th edition adventure I’ve toyed with for years
  • More detail in the catalogue area (not to mention rebuilding the wiki!)

As to when these will eventuate, I’m not so sure, but never fear SB is never too far from my mind…

Publishing History of 1st Edition Stormbringer

While tattered and worn copies of the 1st edition Stormbringer box set are not too hard to find, many gamers have been confused as to what actually constitutes 1st Edition and what exactly came in the box.

The following information has been collected from The Acaeum, a website and forum dedicated to the collection of Dungeons & Dragons material (and other RPGs, of course), as well as Wayne’s Books (a great place to get your second hand gems!)

Creating a Young Kingdoms Campaign

Creating a Stormbringer campaign can be a complex task, assuming that the Game Master is, like Michael Moorcock, attempting to tell a long and involved story with its own set of heroes, villains and memorable occurrences. The best such campaigns are planned from the beginning, but it is also possible to begin without a grand narrative envisioned from the start, instead starting with a simple idea for perhaps one or two short, self-contained adventures and embellishing the plot as you go. This, after all, was how Moorcock’s own epics grew.

Regardless of your approach, planning and running a Young Kingdoms campaign can prove challenging to even the most experienced Game Master. This article offers a few thoughts concerning campaigns that Game Masters might wish to consider before your own campaign or plans for one progress too far.
