Elric of Melniboné

Mongoose Publishing acquire the Eternal Champion License from Chaosium in 2006, and published new versions of both Elric of Melniboné and Hawkmoon. The initial editions of these games utilised the Runequest rule set (itself licensed from Greg Stafford), while the 2nd edition Elric of Melniboné was built on both the Runequest II and latterly Mongoose’s own Legend game system.

Although no official announcement was ever made, the license for Michael Moorcock’s games expired around 2013, although in reality their production had almost completely ceased by the time authors like Lawrence Whitaker and Pete Nash left Mongoose Publishing in 2011.

Elric of Melniboné – Signs & Portents

Between 2003 and 2011 Mongoose Publishing produced Signs & Portents magazine, a monthly periodical that supported the company’s various miniature and roleplaying game lines. During the reasonably short run, Elric of Melniboné (both 1st and 2nd Editions) had a number of articles, adventures and support material appear in this ‘zines pages.

This article explores two cities of the Young Kingdoms mentioned in the novel ‘The Dreamthief ’s Daughter’ and the short story ‘A Portrait in Ivory’. The former, Cesh, is nothing more than a name  and a brief reference, which I have expanded here for use in the Elric of Melniboné game. The latter, Séred Öma, is more detailed, and offers a new people, the Na’äne, to complement those already present in the Elric canon. There are other lands and places too, such as fabled Xanardwys, and these will be explored in future Signs and Portents articles.

Issue #61 (October 2008)

Article Title – Love, and Hate
Description – Supplement
Author – Lawrence Whitaker
Page Count – 3 pages

Love, devotion and hatred are a central theme of the Eternal Champion saga: tragically doomed love; unrequited love; passionate love; love across the Million Spheres; lost loves, slaughtered loves and love regained. So too does Hatred figure: Yyrkoon and Theleb K’aarna’s hatred for Elric, motivated by greed and jealousy; Elric’s hatred of his own fate; the beggars of Nadsokor’s hatred for Tanelorn.

Just as the game mechanics for Elric of Melniboné provide a way of dedicating one’s soul to a god (the Pact), so too can Love and Hate be quantified. This section provides an optional set of  mechanics for Games Masters to use to simulate the effects of love and hate in their Elric of Melniboné campaigns (and, equally, in Hawkmoon and the forthcoming Corum game).
